Hey, if you want something cool to do over the next week, or so, check out the best website going. http://www.wechoosethemoon.org/ relives the Apollo 11 moon landing mission with incredible detail and access to real time (plus 40 years) NASA audio for the 40th anniversary of the greatest voyage in human history. Liftoff is around 9:30am on Thursday if you're interested and you'll be able to follow everything from the page and several social network sites, including the twitters. It should be great. I'll be wasting a lot of time tomorrow morning at work watching the liftoff and over the weekend as well, waiting for the lunar landing. Thanks to the JFK Presidential Library and Museum for constructing this site with great detail and respect for the mission.
To prep, I pulled out When We Left Earth tonight to watch again. I said it before, but its a great doc of the NASA missions. Few docs that I've seen are better. I highly recommend it. You can borrow it, but only if you rock the Blu Ray.
You gotta love NASA, right? Some might argue that, currently, there are better places to spend our money and they may be right. But they freaking take stuff on Earth and put it in space. They're like the repo men for the entire planet. They're getting rid of stuff that we don't have a use for here. I think the stuff they do is worth it for the most part. NASA is cool.
In other news, we find out if there are boy parts or girl parts on the baby on Tuesday. Can't wait. Aly is calling him "Beast", thinking its a boy and naming him from "Beauty and the Beast". So at least we've got a name for it. Mindee and I are hoping for girl parts, but we're all pretty sure (Aly included) that its a boy. Be among the first to know if you're following me on the twitters on Tuesday afternoon. Yup, this is what its come to. I'll be tweeting from the doctors office.
Aly starts soccer next month and guess who's her coach? Yep. Poor kids. They have no idea what's coming. Does this mean I get to pick the team name? Aly only wants to play because she knows she gets a new pair of shoes (cleats). I'm making her wear those things all the time. Better watch out. She'll go spikes up on ya.
Today at work we had unlimited floats (root beer, cream soda and orange soda). Now this sounds like a great idea, but trust me... its not. I haven't eaten any food since 1:30 and its almost 11:30 now. I can't stand the site of it. I've dumped 3 times since 2pm and my stomach hasn't stopped grumbling since. And for those not on the twitters, we're not calling them Orange Cow's. That's ridiculous. We're going with Orange Alpacas. And if we're counting at home, I had 5 in about 20 minutes.
Toodles kids. Maybe I'll blog again sometime in the next month since football/Madden season is almost upon us.
Let me leave you with this. Hi, I'm Ronald McDonald. I swear I'm not going to kill you. Sweet dreams.
Poll ? of the Day:
What should I name Aly's soccer team? You must incorporate a color in the name (ex. Purple Cobras, Orange Alpacas, Pink Taco's etc.) and I'd probably prefer something Mexican.

"Doin' a little East Coast stormin'"
Getting back into the swing of things after returning from our "Motown Philly, Back Again Baseball Trip '09". 3 games in 4 days. We wussed out on Pittsburgh Sunday because... well... we're old men who would much rather see our kids and not be in too much trouble with our wives but just won't admit it.
Impressions:
Washington DC
Nationals Park is pretty sweet. Nothing totally outstanding, but really nice. If they could only get something resembling a baseball team to play in it...
We also drove through downtown DC. That was the first time I've ever done that. Now I know why I've never driven through DC in any of the 100 times I've been there before. Jesus created the subway for a reason.
We also slammed some burgers from Five Guys while in town. They're supposed to be the east coast rival of In 'N Out. Good, but in the end, it was just a burger. Beef, bacon, cheese, lettuce, onion, jalapeno, mustard, mayo, bun. I can do that at my house.
Big ups to the Zoz family for letting us crash there and kill most of a bottle of "The Weed". Arnold Palmer's with "The Weed" is a good thing and can be hazardous.
Baltimore
First off, if you're a single guy, move to Baltimore. Jackpot!
Camden Yards is an icon in baseball for a reason. I've been there 3 or 4 times and I still love that place. Its going to be there for a long time to come. They did everything about that ballpark right. If you haven't been there yet, you need to go there just as much as you need to get to Fenway and Wrigley. Its that good.
Eating around town was great. We did lunch at some seafood place along the Chesapeake and devoured a dozen crabs and a crab-stuffed pretzel and coated in cheese. JIMP! I also learned that I can happily make a meal out of licking Old Bay seasoning off my hands.
We also hit up Blue Moon Cafe for breakfast. DDD told us to go there and get the Cap'n Crunch french toast. And when we hear Cap'n Crunch and french toast together, we go there. That stuff was amazing and I don't think I've ever felt worse after eating a meal than I did then. I was totally stuffed but wanted more. I couldn't explain it.
Walking around the bay area in Baltimore was a lot of fun as well. They did their downtown right as well. Wish we had something like that.
Also, not only did we sleep in the same hotel as the Atlanta Braves, but we slept on the same floor as the team. Future Baseball Hall of Famer Larry Jones asked me how I was doing and pitcher Tim Hudson gave me the stinkeye after I may, or may not, have said that his shaved head looked like "a penis".
Philadelphia
Philly can be summed up as a disappointment. We lost the sun somewhere before we arrived and didn't see it again until we got out of town the next morning. The Liberty Bell and Independence Hall were cool, if we could have gotten into Independence Hall (oops!). The place was smelly. Not really dirty, but I got more rotten aromas up my nose than in any other city I have ever been in. I wanted to like it. I really did. I tried. I just didn't get into it.
The ballpark was pretty nice. It looks huge, but it really only seats a couple thousand more than GABP. It was kind of cool, but it didn't really feel very special. At least not until we humped the ginormous statue of Michael Jack Schmidt out front. Then it felt very special indeed. Harold Baines last year, MJS this year. Gotcha! Next year, I've got my eyes set on Thurman Munson.
We also hit up Geno's and Pat's for our Cheese Steak Challenge. Pat's is the "original", Geno's is the "best", according to the locals. Here's what I learned, Cheez Whiz is where its at on a Philly Cheese Steak. Gotta do that. Also, call me crazy, but Penn Station is better. If you dropped Cheez Whiz on the Philly at Penn Station, you'd have a better PCS than anything in Philadelphia. The meat had little flavor, no seasoning, and the bread was too chewy. You almost had to rip it off like a lion rips off meat from a gazelle. I'm not going to say PCS's in Philly are overrated, it is a PCS afterall, but.... you know.
Also in Philly, Ryan picked up a Phillies shirt and noted to the rest of us how much he looks like John Kruk. Its uncanny. If Ryan had a mullet and one less testicle, I'd think they were the same person.
And Simon became good friends with a Marlins scout who was wearing a 2003 World Series championship ring. Not only did Simon talk to the guy, but he also tried on his ring. Who does that?
Finally, a little thought on the state of Pennsylvania. In any other state in the union, traveling on the interstate IS FREE. In Penn, a ride in a van on I76 from Philly to Pittsburgh comes to $16.50!!! Why in the world should I drop $16.50 to ride on a road that's free anywhere else? That's ridiculous. That's half a tank of gas. My head is going to explode if I think about this anymore. Also, why do you need a speed limit of 45mph on an interstate while rolling through some podunk town? Even the speed limit in Atlanta is 55. And really, stop signs for people 5 feet from entering an interstate? Seriously? Murph, who's running that place? And explain the toll thing to me again. Its not some special turnpike. Its an interstate, built and funded by the feds.
And I tried to smell the chocolate when we drove by Hershey, but all I got was a whiff of Simon's booty.
Other notes:
* The Reds suck. When you can pitch but can't hit, you're a .500 ball club. Simple.
* Watching the Pens win game 7 on Friday night at whatever bar that was in Baltimore was a lot of fun. Now I really want to see a Wings/Pens Stanley Cup Final next year as well to give the league a real, marketable rivalry.
* PBR, why do I love you so?
* We got to watch "Snatch" in the van while traveling. I forgot how great that movie is. Hadn't seen it since it was in the theaters almost 10 years ago. That's also one of the few times I've ever liked Jason Statham. We also got Brad to watch something other than a comedy. Amazing.
* Slim Jim's need to be a larger part of my diet. As does anything coated in crushed Cap'n Crunch.

My traditional D-Day post... a day late
Seriously, Mr. Silver wins?!? He was a fun gym teacher and all, but wow! I didn't see that one coming. I voted for Fegens (sp?) because dude was all up on my nuts when it came to hockey.
I was pleased to wake up yesterday to find the D-Day coverage on the tele. I also found this link to Reagan's 1984 D-Day speech at Normandy. Such a much better speaker than Obama. There's a reason they called him "The Great Communicator". But watching him while listening to Obama in the background is a bit confusing. At one point, I thought Obama wanted the Russians to tear down a wall of some kind. But at least I didn't think that D-Day and Pearl Harbor Day were the same, as Mindee did. She also asked, while watching the speeches, "Is this in America?"
She may look smart...
While watching the coverage, I noticed CNN had about a million shots of Tom Hanks. Hanks had almost more facetime than Obama. Here's what's funny... there's a whole generation of people out there who instantly connect Hanks to D-Day. Heck, I'm sure there's lots of people who think that he was actually there. You mean he wasn't there??? I get this strange feeling that when he dies, they're going to bury him in Normandy.
Also, I can't remember who, but someone mentioned Ann Frank. All I could think about was being cooped up somewhere in occupied Europe. Can you imagine being under the thumb of the Nazi's for 3,4 or 5 years and hearing that not only were your liberators on their way, but they were now here? It has to be an incredible feeling to know that if you can just fight your way a little longer, you would make it and be set free.
I also tried to imagine what it would have been like as a German soldier on the beach and watching the channel turn black with more invaders than he ever could have imagined crossing. What went through his head?
What about the allied force? At what point did they understand that almost nothing worked the night before in destroying the beachhead before the landing force arrived at dawn? Probably not until it was too late unfortunately.
Anyway, these are just some of the things I think about when a day like D-Day pops up on the calendar. Hope you got to think about such things. I did. Then I cut the grass and watched a crappy hockey game.
Oh, and check these pix out. They're kind of cool... in a totalitarian kind of way.

Can't make up my mind on PSP GO!
HA!
We took Aly to Kings Island last night for the first time this season. She loves that place. She owns that place. A few inches taller than last fall means she can ride a few more rides. She got down with The Beastie and loved it. She was hesitant at first, but once we got on the ride, she was ready to go. By the time we were done, she wanted to go again. She had a blast. By the end of the season, there'll only be a handful of rides she won't be able to ride.
So after riding The Beastie, it starts to storm and we take shelter. After about 30 minutes of quality rain, some KI dude tells us that we have to move away from our shelter to an indoor arcade (by The Racer/Octipus/Scrambler). Now, they're never going to tell you that there's a tornado coming, no need to induce panic, but when they take people who are under a perfectly good shelter and move them to a building, you know there's trouble brewin'. So we're pretty much on lockdown for an hour inside this arcade. Employees hook up kids with handfuls of tokens to play games. Kids win ridiculous amounts of free tickets which are then redeemed for garbage prizes (Aly got a Strawberry Shortcake lunch box). Whatever keeps the kids busy and happy while the parents are worried about whether, or not, everyone's going to die.
We finally get out of the storm and are allowed to leave, but its now 10:10pm and the blue Smurf ice cream stands are closed... BS!!!
Anyway, the kicker to the story is we finally get out to the car and Aly's window had been completely opened throughout the entire night. Car was soaked. Good times.
At least I got some KI LaRosa's and was able to check out Diamondback. That thing looks amazing. She will be mine. Oh yes! She will be mine.
Gonna be a great year at KI this year. Darren, I think I saw a hobo piss in your new yard.
Jay Bruce better shut his mouth. These guys stink again.
Poll ? of the Day:
What illness does Joey Votto really have? Your guess is as good as any of the Reds team doctors.
**New poll question to the right. And by "right" I mean left.

"Lot's of DX-7's and old athletic shoes..."
HUGE weekend starts today! Arcade Legends opens up today (next to a Dunkin' Donuts no less), Reds/Indians, camping in Indiana for me, Terminator is out (though I probably won't see it until next week), ridiculous amounts of grilled foods, sun, attempting a new salad recipe and tons of great NBA and NHL playoff action that I'll miss.
If you're not watching The Mamba, The King, Superman II and Melo you're missing out on the best NBA final 4 in years, but there's still plenty of time. You wanna play in the NBA, kid? Watch Kobe and Carmelo beat the crap out of each other in the paint these first two games, not bitch and complain about it, deal with the physicality of the playoffs and still do their job to drop 35 points a game. Kobe dropped a three pointer with Melo's finger in his eye last night. Literally. In his eye. That's cold.
For some reason, I'm less interested in the Cavs/Magic. Maybe because I just don't want to watch the Magic. Maybe its I'm still pissed that they beat the Celtics (the better team did win, though). But fyi... the Lakers/Nuggets series is must see television for every game.
I don't see any problem with a Cavs/Nuggets Finals. Its not the sexy Cavs/Lakers, Kobe/LeBron matchup the NBA wants, but a Melo/LeBron series could be equally exciting. Just as long as the Magic don't get in. That's a nightmare. Nobody outside of Orlando wants the Magic to win this series. Superman II is good... really good, but he doesn't draw the fringe fans.
A few questions:
Where the frack was Andrew Bynum last night? 9 points, 2 rebounds, 1 block in 18 minutes???Remember at the beginning of the season when everyone (myself included) thought that the Lakers would be oodles better now that they had Andrew Bynum back? Whatever. Thanks.
Second, who's the biggest loser in all of these playoffs? The Detroit Pistons. Hey, you could have drafted Carmelo #2 overall immediately after Cleveland drafted LeBron. Did you? No. You thought that Darko Milicic was a better choice. Good call. This year you traded Chauncey Billups (aka YOUR BEST PLAYER!!!) to the Nuggets for an aged AI who hasn't won a championship. Awesome. You handed Denver a championship basketball team and all Denver had to do was let go of AI in the process. Tough decision there. Joe Dumars should be jumping off a roof in the DET this week.
And I haven't even gotten on Crosby, Malkin and the Penguins yet. I love the Pens. They are the reason to watch the NHL playoffs. I want to think that another Red Wings/Penguins Stanley Cup Final would end differently, but it won't. Detroit's defense is better, their goaltending is more consistent and they can match Pittsburgh's offensive output point for point. But if you're the NHL, you couldn't ask for anything more than another final between the best organization in the last 20 years versus two of the best three players in the league.
The only upsetting thing in the NHL playoffs this year is that since the Canes beat the Bruins last round, we won't get to see anymore of this kid.
Its Memorial Day. The Reds will either stick with the plan and begin their predictable yearly downfall between this holiday and the 4th of July (things ain't lookin' too good) or they'll buck the trend, Homer Bailey will produce this weekend, Votto will stop getting kids illnesses and Voltron will rock some hotrocks for his back and the team will surge in the next 6 weeks.
All I know is that I have about 3 weeks until we do our east coast baseball swing in DC, Baltimore, Philly and Pittsburgh.
Next year, I'm thinking of NYC and Boston.
Punch Out! for the Wii is here and it is as good and nostalgic as you could have imagined. The motion controls are easy to use and makes the game even more fun. Thanks to playoff games, I've only been able to get through the first weight class and I'm assuming the game will get a lot more difficult as I go. But beating the tar out of Glass Joe and Von Kaiser never gets old and as Justin mentioned, the mulitplayer will be great as well. Its probably the reason to have a Wii right now.
Aly "graduated" from year 1 of pre-school yesterday. If there is such a thing as graduating from a school you're just going to go back to next year, then I suppose a graduation is warranted. Kid has 1 more year of pre-school and this time next year we'll be smacked dead in the face with kindergarten. According to the school, she's grown 3.5" this school year which means she should be able to ride The Beastie at KI, assuming we actually get there this season. She's growing up. Soon, she'll be driving cars, playing golf and dating Collin.
Poll ?'s of the Memorial Day Weekend:
Are you cooking anything different than the normal this weekend? If so, what?
I'm puting up a poll to the left... are you a Kobe guy or a LeBron guy?
***Update!!! Arcade Legends is the bomb diggity. We had a great time and I can't wait to take Aly there. Worth every penny. If you ever spent time in an arcade as a kid, you need to be there. You will not leave disappointed.
Nothin' says lovin' like "Michael Jackson's Moonwalker". Playing as MJ, moonwalking to take down badguys to SAVE CHILDREN and turning into a cyborg after touching a monkey. All while rocking out to "Smooth Criminal". Best game ever.
My only knock on the place is that it was a tad warm. With a bunch of sweaty gamers in there, that place should NEVER be over 55 degrees. It needs to be an icebox.
***Another update!!! You tools that voted for Kobe (ahem, me) better change your votes. Amazing just happened. Hope you watched.
